Learning to be a Chief MARKET Officer
Elevating the CMO role to be a strategist, rain maker and market maker
How do CMOs get out of the weeds and make a real impact on the BUSINESS, not just marketing? Christine / Chris Heckart started a movement several years ago to reframe Chief MarketING Officer to a Chief MARKET Officer. The concept is that the top marketer should be more than an executor of promotion programs - but should instead be a primary thought leader within the company about:
๐ธ What MARKET the company plays in (what is the TAM, how is the market itself expanding, how do we shape the category, name, and expansion of the market?)
๐ธ The ideal customer profile (who is the most profitable type of customer? Who values what we sell? What roles within the ICP do need to win? What matters most to them?)
๐ธ Our differentiation, product, and COMPANY STRATEGY - how do we approach that market to win, using all tools available to us - product, marketing, sales, partnerships, M&A, and more?
To do this, you have to be strong in product marketing & product strategy (knowing the market, product, customer, and differentiation). You have to be strong in finance (understanding the levers of profitability and ROI). You have to build a team that gives you competitive insights, customer insights, and market insights. You have to bring real customer stories and priorities to the conversation. Mike Linton, former CMO of Best Buy and eBay, would say as CMO, he was the Voice of the Customer in the C-Suite, and his tenure and impact were legendary.
CMOs who play this role have a SEAT AT THE TABLE. They make a huge impact beyond taking orders and driving MQLs. They are a partner to the CEO. And eventually, they make more $$ and have opportunities to progress to CRO, COO or even CEO.
